Wilderness Medicine Courses
Three-Day CME courses for medical professionals, and customizable courses for medical and non medical professionals including one day courses.
At ALPTERRA, we blend medical instruction with immersive, outdoor learning—set against the backdrop of the White Mountains. Whether you’re a healthcare provider, a first responder, or simply someone who wants to be more prepared in the backcountry, this course will give you the confidence to improvise, adapt, and make sound decisions when you’re miles from help and nothing goes according to plan.
What You’ll Actually Do
The three-day course includes at least 20 simulations for scenario-based practice in addition to time spent learning skills. In all of our courses, you will splint broken bones, dress wounds, reduce dislocations, diagnose and treat medical conditions, and make evacuation decisions. Weather, environment, and proximity to a hospital and professional rescue service will all be considered in your decisions.
You will place tourniquets and debate whether to move someone with a suspected spinal injury when hypothermia is developing. You will consider the risks and benefits of cervical spine precautions and traction splints.
By the end of the course you will have practiced these maneuvers so many times that you will feel more comfortable utilizing these skills with an organized approach that you can rely on in high pressure situations.
The Skills Behind the Scenarios
Practical skills in prevention, assessment, treatment, and transport of common illnesses and injuries in remote environments
A deeper understanding of wilderness-specific logistics, equipment, improvisation, rescue, and risk management
Decision-making frameworks for incomplete information and changing conditions
Experience treating mock injuries in realistic outdoor scenarios, with a few realistic curve balls thrown in
